US FBI joins Continental cyberattack investigation

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is concerned in an investigation of a latest cyberattack on German automotive provider Continental, an individual aware of the matter advised Reuters on Wednesday.

The FBI was introduced on board by German safety authorities, the individual mentioned, confirming an earlier Handelsblatt report.

Continental declined to remark, and the FBI was not instantly obtainable for remark.

Continental mentioned earlier this month it was investigating the theft of firm information in a cyberattack in August however declined to touch upon media reviews that hackers had put the knowledge up on the market.

Handelsblatt had reported on the time that hackers had printed a listing of the info on the darknet and that it included price range, funding and technique plans, in addition to data associated to some Continental prospects.

Handelsblatt mentioned the hackers had put the info up on the market for US$50 million (A$74 million) after Continental “apparently didn’t wish to pay a ransom”.
